ITEM OF THE WEEK Surrounded by blue dye, you see people weaving designs into the warp and weft of fabric. It's fascinating to see but you realize that this isn't where you're originally from. In fact, you're far form home, you recognize that these people are Japanese and you begin to become more fascinated with what they are weaving rather than how you got there. Kasuri is a Japanese word for fabric that has been woven with fibers dyed specifically to create patterns and images in the fabric. It can be woven by hand or machine but commonly by hand. The pattern can be woven into the weft or warp of the shirt with alternating colors. It's a fascinating technique called Ikat where fibers ware woven using resist-dyeing techniques (it may sound fancy but it's just wax on the fibers to prevent the color from attaching to the pattern.) It's unclear where Ikat developed first as woven textiles don't survive for long periods of time without proper care. But it's been theorized that it developed over many countries independently of one another. However there is high probability that it was developed in India or somewhere in that region which explains why the Japanese adopted it. This particular shirt boasts a geometric Kasuri design, it's unique, and rather interesting as the pattern isn't straight like stripes but rather angled and tossed about. There are even patterns on the single breast pocket to match the rest of the shirt. What makes this shirt so fascinating is that it has a "banded collar" which means you can attach your own white spread collar or blue spread collar, whatever color you choose! It gives you the ability to modify your shirt in any way you see fit, or you could wear it without a collar, that's pretty hip! (It's also reminiscent of casual wear from the 1920's.) If you're looking for that one special shirt, then look no further as this is the one for you! Trust us, it's a great shirt, you'll love it the moment you receive it and others will be jealous of your Kasuri shirt. It's such high quality that you can SEE the weft of the shirt as it delves into the pattern. Now THAT is an awesome shirt! Also, it can be worn out to dinner and other evening outings since it's both casual and semi-formal! Two for one! Need to locate one for you? Here you go: Kasuri Oxford Shirt |
