The Denim Vault started with a single thought of owning and fading a pair of selvage (selvedge) Nudie Jeans in 2007, it seemed daunting to find the right pair in the right size. Should it be a Regular Ralf? Grim Tim? Perhaps Slim Jim? We weren't sure so we went with Regular Ralf, the best selling cut that Nudie Jeans Co. produced at the time. They faded so well that we became enamored with the denim, it was Dry Japan. The multitude of colors that came from fading such a pair brought on the curiosity of "what else is out there like this?" So we researched every single thread of information that we could about selvage (selvedge) denim, the history, the looms, and how they came to be purchased by the Japanese. Now the best fading selvage comes from Japan, which we are the foremost purveyors of raw Japanese selvage.
With age comes experience, we know that White Oak (USA made Cone Denim from North Carolina) has a history as well since they produced selvage denim on their looms from the beginning of the industrial revolution. Japanese Denim is more of a red cast whereas Cone Denim is green cast, Jack Spade raw BT-100 will fade from ruri blue to an enigmatic blue-green with age, sweat, and a good ol' fashioned beating. Japanese Denim will fade from dark indigo to a lighter cobalt blue with a slight hint of red, so far both denims are on par with a good thrashing. So go ahead, purchase a pair, and make memories with your jeans by fading them yourself. Remember it takes time, go as long as you can without washing (6 months minimum), then turn them inside out, wash in warm water, and hang dry; or, if you prefer, put them on when they're wet so that they conform to your body as they shrink. You won't be disappointed with those one-of-a-kind fades that you created yourself.
Even if a pair of jeans isn't selvage then don't worry, it only means that the denim is woven on a loom that is larger than 36" and therefore a single pair of jeans cannot be made from all that fabric. Non-selvage jeans will still fade with great results as long as you follow the same routine for selvage denim. Whatever you choose, selvage or non-selvage, rigid jeans are a great choice for those that want the satisfaction of creating a pair of distressed jeans on their own with hard work. Nothing is greater than to see your jeans progress through the months/years of wear, it's a great reward, and a conversation starter! Each tear will have a story to tell and sharing them is half the fun, the other half is getting them!
If you don't have time for fading jeans then we also carry a wide assortment of pre-distressed and washed jeans from such brands as Double RL, Rugby Ralph Lauren, Nudie Jeans Co., Levi's Vintage Clothing, Diesel, and many more.
