In the 1920's it just wasn't about the blue collar workwear such as railman, engineer, dockman, or military man; oh no, there was something far more sinister at work. Gangster is simply a term used to describe someone who is in a gang, but that doesn't mean that they're the proper material to be the head man of a large organized crime syndicate. But in order to understand our fellow suit wearing, tommy gun holding fellows, we have to look back at what started this whole gang ideal and it was actually pretty easy to understand why they would take such great lengths to do the illegal.
Gangsters and mobsters were born when prohibition was in place, the very moment that the government prohibited alcohol of any sort is the day that runners were born. Runners were the people who were designated to bring alcohol (from a legal state) into the next state that had it banned. So began the very first illegal runs, it may not seem like an interesting starting point but it has a definite meaning. Whenever the government deems something illegal, there will be mobs and gangs to make sure that people get their vice whether it be something as expensive as cocaine or something menial such as a liquor ban. Whatever the case, there was always someone pulling the strings from behind, someone that everyone listened to.
These are the head guys, the Dons, so to speak. They chose their right hand men, they chose who was in charge of what, and the most important was that everyone listened to what he had to say. If he deemed that someone was a threat to their way of life, they would be taken out, no questions asked. The reason for all this is because of the power that they had, the Dons had done some dirty work themselves and earned their position so they were infamous, later famous, for their rings.
You'll recognize some famous gangsters and mobsters but always remember that it all started in the 1920's with the alcohol prohibition and because of that these men were born. But to say anything about their fashion? Well in order to be in a gang or mob, you had to dress nice because there's always a dress code. Just like the workers of the 1920's had their uniforms, so did these men. Usually zoot suits, fedoras, pin-striped suits, white shirts with suspenders, and shiny black shoes that had to be clean at all times. But never disgrace this uniform because all gangsters and mobsters have a history and these old families still exist to this day so give them the respect they deserve, after all they were some of the best dressed people in the 1920's.
